Over 100 participants learn the ins and outs of Brahmas hockey
Texas Brahmas Hockey club held their second annual Ladies Hockey 101 event tonight at the NYTEX Sports Center and let me tell you, from the start, it was a lot of fun. My understanding was that there were 115 participants, nearly doubling the crowd from last year.
The evening began at the Zuroma Bar and Grill where Brahmas players mingled and served their guests food and drinks. Then Dan Wildfong and Ron Vogel stepped up to the microphone to begin with some team building exercises which focused on practice, teamwork and perseverance, all important for a hockey player.
I'm not sure where the chug and shot contest fit in, but it was fun. Drawings for prizes including team signed hockey sticks and even autographed photos of the players rounded out the beginning of the evening.
Next, the ladies made their way to the ice for a presentation which included an explanation of the rules of the game, including demonstrations of icing, offsides, board checking, etc. Several ladies got the opportunity to "dress" AJ Gale and Scott Thauwald while learning about the various gear the players wear.
Joe Palmer explained goal tending basics, there was a race in which Brahmas players pushed goal nets loaded with two riders and several players took part in a hardest shot contest. Many questions were answered and there was a lot of laughter.
Finally, the group was given the opportunity to tour the locker room and watch a highlight film from last season before breaking away for the evening. The Brahmas bus was open to those who wanted to take a look inside.
