Bobby Chaumont put the RiverKings on the board first, just 20 seconds into their first powerplay opportunity at the 6:56 mark of the first period. Chaumont scored on a deflection, getting his seventh powerplay goal of the season at Brett Jaeger's expense. Derek Landmesser and Stephen Margeson were in on the assist.
Two minutes later, The Brahmas evened it up when Jordan Cameron was able to poke in a pass from Pete Rouleau at the 8:55 mark. Tyler Skworchinski was also credited with the assist.
Brett Jaeger faced a three man attack after a centering pass from Darrell Stoddard to Garrett Larson led to a blocked shot but Dallas Steward managed to get the rebound and gave the RiverKings a 2-1 lead at the 16:34 mark. Steward was playing his first game as a RiverKing, having signed a contract today. He comes the now defunct Augusta Lynx (ECHL).
Just over a minute later, Derek Landmesser received a pass from the half boards and took a shot which was blocked by Jaeger but the puck bounced just outside the crease and once again, Dallas Steward got the rebound and pushed the puck through an unguarded spot to Jaeger's right, giving the RiverKings the 3-1 lead.
The RiverKings outshot the Brahmas 14-7 in the first period.
Both goaltenders were strong in the second period. The Brahmas outshot the RiverKings 11-7 but were unable to solve Kevin Beech.
The third period was a defensive nightmare for the Brahmas as the RiverKings went on the attack and never let up. They scored four goals, three of them on the powerplay and managed to hold the Brahmas to one goal.
Darrell Stoddard got the first score 3:44 into the period after tipping in the puck off a slapshot by defenseman Jeff Alcombrack. Dallas Steward was in on the assist for his third point of the night.
Marc Belanger rifled one past Kevin Beech and added another point for the Brahmas with an unassisted goal at the 5:07 mark making it 4-2. It was Belanger's third goal against the RiverKings this season.
Mississippi went right back on the offensive with their next score at the 9:44 mark, coming from defenseman Dane Marshall, assisted by Joe Markusen and Bobby Chaumont making it 5-2.
The next goal came just 18 seconds later off the stick of Dallas Costanzo, assisted by former Brahma Brad Bonello and Andrew Lackner at the 10:02 mark.
With the score at 6-2, Dan Wildfong pulled Brett Jaeger and sent in David Cacciola. Cash looked sharp but the RiverKings offense was able to solve him after four attempts with the final score coming from forward Matt Pierce at the 17:04 mark, assisted by Joe Markusen and Dane Marshall.
Mississippi outshot the Brahmas 10-5 in the third period and 31-23 in the game.
The RiverKings played very disciplined hockey throughout the contest and were called for just four minors for eight minutes. Their penalty killers were able to hold off all of the Brahmas' powerplay opportunities. The seven goals beat their previous high of six on November 8th against the Wichita Thunder. They were red hot on the powerplay going a season high four for six.
Kevin Beech won his 11th game of the season (11-6-0) with a 21-save performance in the net. Brett Jaeger takes the loss and goes to 9-3-2.
The Brahmas' goaltenders had only given up 8 goals in the last 7 games. This was the second time the Bulls gave up seven in one game (11/23 at OKC) this season.
"It was unnaceptable not to play 60 minutes of hockey," Dan Wildfong told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "You can't try to play 40 and win in this league. We're a better team than what we showed tonight."
With the victory, the RiverKings are now 13-9-0 for the season and 6-3-0 at home. Texas fell to 13-7-2 for the year and is 4-5-1 away from NYTEX.
